2 Overview

Situated in the southern part of the World Heritage Listed, Daintree National Park, Mossman Gorge is also one of the few places in the country that visitors can gain an insight into the lives, culture and beliefs of Australia's Indigenous population and their connection to the natural environment. This tour takes visitors on a guided walk along private, gentle tracks, visiting special places and culturally significant sites, past traditional bark shelters and over meandering cool rainforest streams.

Mossman Gorge Tour and Dreamtime Walk

Mossman Gorge Centre serves as the gateway to Mossman Gorge. Over 20 years ago the Centre was just a dream that Kuku Yalanji elder, Roy Gibson, had for ensuring the sustainability of the pristine environment, his community and his culture. Today, through Roy and the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC)'s creation of the Mossman Gorge Centre, Roy is able to share his culture and traditions with the public, while creating employment and training opportunities for his community.

Mossman Gorge Centre is proudly staffed by local residents, 90 percent of which are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage, and all of whom have a breadth of knowledge on the area, its cultural significance and natural wonders.

Dreamtime Gorge Walk

A "must do" for every visitor to Mossman Gorge, conducted by the local Indigenous people. Ngadiku (Nar-di-gul) means stories and legends from a long time ago in local Kuku Yalanji language. This tour takes visitors on a guided walk along private, gentle tracks, visiting special places and culturally significant sites, past traditional bark shelters and over meandering cool rainforest streams.

Visitors will be welcomed with a traditional 'smoking' ceremony that cleanses and wards off bad spirits. The walk then meanders through stunning rainforest and takes in traditional huts or humpies. The experienced interpretive Indigenous guide will demonstrate traditional plant use, identify bush food sources and provide an enchanting narrative of the rainforest and their special relationship with this unique tropical environment. The guide will demonstrate traditions like making bush soaps and ochre painting. Enjoy traditional bush tea and damper.
